Hornsea’s Starfish Galaxy Trail set to boost tourism, support local businesses, and celebrate community creativity.

Hornsea’s popular community venue, Hornsea Floral Hall, has been confirmed as the lead sponsor of a brand new public art initiative set to launch in the town later this year. The Starfish Galaxy Trail, organised by the not-for-profit Hornsea Collective, will see six large, colourful starfish sculptures mounted on buildings around the town. Each is uniquely designed by local artists to reflect Hornsea’s rich culture, coastal charm, and creative identity.

“As a community-based venue, we believe the Starfish Galaxy Trail will attract new visitors, support local businesses, and help strengthen the town’s economy”, said Richard Carmichael, Chairman of Hornsea Floral Hall. “We’re proud to be the lead sponsor of something so positive for Hornsea.”

The trail aims to encourage footfall through the high street, seafront and green spaces, supporting independent shops, cafés and attractions while providing a free, accessible cultural experience for families, residents, and visitors alike.

The Floral Hall’s chosen design comes from mural and street artist Katy Cobb of Tickton, known for her contributions to the Puffin Trail and Mischief of Rats Trail. Her starfish design, inspired by the town’s vintage slogan ‘Hornsea: A Lakeland by the Sea’, felt especially fitting for The Floral Hall’s seafront location. “I love sculpture trails, they offer screen-free, outdoor fun that brings art to everyone” said Katy. “This one will encourage exploration, highlight local businesses, and carry a message about caring for our coastline.”

The trail is being funded through sponsorships, grants and local fundraisers. Additional sponsors are still being sought for the remaining starfish sculptures, with details available at www.starfishgalaxy.co.uk.

“This trail will not only brighten the town visually, but also strengthen our community, socially, culturally, and economically,” said Sher King, founder of Hornsea Collective. “It’s a celebration of Hornsea told through joyful, accessible public art.”

As part of the fundraising effort, The Green Owl in Hornsea will host a Starfish Galaxy Fundraiser Day on Sunday 22nd June, from 11am to 3pm, featuring an outdoor food stand, live music, raffle, cake stall, and a specially created Starfish cocktail.
