‘Oceana’

ARTIST: Judy Flanagan

Judy Flanagan, a Hornsea artist inspired by nature, place, and emotional connection, is thrilled to be part of the Starfish Galaxy Trail, a new public art initiative in East Yorkshire. This exciting wall-mounted sculpture trail celebrates creativity and community, with a long-term vision of expanding along the East Coast. Known for capturing the beauty of landscapes, seascapes and florals, Judy was drawn to this project’s mission of creating a lasting, accessible art experience for all.

“The background of my design is an amalgamation of the night sky and deep water colours with a sprinkling of the Milky Way. Using the theme of the Starfish (aka Seastars), a ‘galaxy’ of starfish covers the sculpture. My research into starfish found in the UK, led to the discovery of many different kinds of shapes, colours and sizes. I have incorporated some of the individual features of the different species in a more specific way by paintbrush and pens.”

“It’s a privilege to be part of something that will not only brighten the community but also help put Hornsea on the map. Art has the power to connect people to places in a meaningful way, and I love the idea of creating something that families, visitors, and locals can enjoy for years to come.”

Starfish Sculpture Sponsor

Pipers Garth Ltd

We are delighted to announce Piper’s Garth has joined the Hornsea community's creative journey by sponsoring one of the starfish sculptures in the 2026 trail. They’ve chosen Oceana by artist Judy Flanagan — a breath-taking design that beautifully captures the magic of the ocean and the cosmos.

Blending the mystery of the deep sea with the wonder of the night sky, ‘Oceana’ features rich, swirling blues and purples, illuminated by a sprinkling of the Milky Way. True to the trail’s theme, a galaxy of starfish (or Seastars) will sweep across the sculpture, uniting the vastness of space and sea in a dazzling display.

As a local business, they’re passionate about supporting art that connects people, place, and imagination — and we can’t wait to see ‘Oceana’ out in the wild in April 2026.
